Anthony C. “Tony” Benhart, 72, of Benton Harbor, passed away, Monday, January 2, 2023 at Corwell Health Lakeland Hospital in St. Joseph.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held 12:00 P.M. Friday, January 6, 2023 at Starks & Menchinger Chapel, 2650 Niles Rd., St. Joseph, with Rev. Tom Bird officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Three Oaks. Friends may visit with the family from 11:00 until 12:00 P.M. Friday at the funeral home. Tony was born January 7, 1950 in Michigan City, IN to Anthony C. Jr. & Shirley L. (Kelly) Benhart. He graduated from River Valley High School, Class of 1968. While in high school, he volunteered his time helping the police with traffic control for school events as well as taking care of lighting and sound in the auditorium for school events. Tony volunteered for the St. Joseph Township Fire Department for many years and was employed at Southwest Michigan Regional Airport, before gaining employment as the superintendent of Crystal Springs Cemetery in Benton Harbor, retiring after twenty-five years of service.
Tony was a jack of all trades. There wasn’t anything he couldn’t build, fix or repair. He enjoyed feeding the birds and watching the wild life around his property. In his free time, Tony enjoyed collecting model trains, watching trains and working in his wood shop.
Tony is survived by his son Anthony “A.J.” Benhart of Benton Harbor; his mother Shirley Benhart of Three Oaks; and his brother Richard Benhart of Three Oaks. He was preceded in death by his father Anthony C. Benhart Jr. on October 16, 2010.
