Alan's Obituary
Alan Edward Solomon, 69, passed away on Sunday, Aug. 14, 2022 at Spectrum Health Lakeland Medical Center, St. Joseph. Arrangements have been entrusted to Starks & Menchinger Chapel – 2650 Niles Rd., St. Joseph, MI.
Alan was born to Richard and Martha (Gross) Solomon on May 16, 1953 in Grand Rapids. He grew up in Rockford, MI and graduated from Rockford High School in 1971. He went on to earn a bachelor’s degree from Western Michigan University.
Alan worked for Century Geophysical in Tulsa, Oklahoma for 2 years. His love for Michigan brought him to St. Joseph where he went on to work for Whirlpool Corporation for 35 years as an IT Systems Manager.
Alan was family-oriented and provided an endless amount of love to his family. He married Deborah in 1976, and they adopted two daughters from China in 1996 and 1999. He loved to support his daughters’ extracurricular activities; he was involved in the St. Joseph BOP and AYSO.
Alan played football during his time at Rockford High School and his love for football carried on throughout his entire life. He loved to attend the St. Joseph High School, Rockford High School, and other local Michigan high school football games. He was also a member of the Twin Cities Camera Club for his love of photography. He was an active member of the YMCA and swam laps daily.
Alan was the definition of a “people-person” – no matter where he went, he would always have a new friend at the end of the day. He will be fondly remembered for his eagerness to help anyone from loved ones to strangers, his jokes, and his friendliness.
Alan’s true second home was in Pentwater, where he owned a cabin near the lake. He loved to spend summers with his family swimming in the lake, lounging at the beach, barbecuing on the grill, and roasting s’mores in the fireplace. He was a beloved member of the North Central Beach Association and served as president on the board for several years.
Alan is survived by his wife of 45 years, Deborah; daughters: Jenna and Abby Solomon; sister, Cathy (Tom) McKay of Joshua, TX; brother, Jim (Tracey) Solomon of Rockford, MI; and a host of nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Martha Solomon; and his sister, Mary VanDyke.
Memorial service and burial will be held sometime in the future in Pentwater, MI.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Malnati Brain Tumor Institute at Northwestern Medical Center or the American Brain Tumor Association.
