Essie Calhoun

On March 5, 1917, a precious baby girl, Essie, was born to the union of John and Bessie (Saddler) Wilson in Brighton, Tennessee. Essie met Anderson Calhoun and they fell madly in love with one another. They united in Holy matrimony on November 13, 1937. To this union, three children were born. She was a lifelong resident of Covert, Michigan and a member of First Baptist Church later uniting with the Gospel Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church in Covert under the leadership of Pastor Henry Allen, Sr. Essie was the matriarch of six generations and loved her family to the highest. She would say, “I love all of my children, All of you.” She enjoyed singing in the choir at First Baptist and planting and tending to her flowers. She has a green thumb. She slipped quietly away to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Sunday, November 15, 2020 at the home of her son, Franklin (Lois) Calhoun in Benton Harbor, Michigan.

Essie leaves precious memories in the heart of two sons, Franklin Delanor (Lois) Calhoun and William Earl (Helen) Calhoun, Sr. both of Benton Harbor, MI; countless grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren; daughter-in-law, Jean Calhoun of Memphis, TN; sister, Cora Jeffries of Covert, MI; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who loved her deeply.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband – Anderson Calhoun, son – John Calhoun, three granddaughters, and several brothers and sisters.

Wake will be held Tuesday, November 24, 2020 from 11:00 A.M. to 12:00 P.M. at Filbrandt Family Funeral Home in South Haven, Michigan. Funeral services will follow at 12:00 P.M. at the funeral home with Pastor Timothy Ezell officiating. Essie will be laid to rest at Covert Cemetery in Covert, Michigan.
