Julia's Obituary

Julia Christianson, 69, of Decatur, passed away Monday, September 20, 2021 at Bronson Methodist Hospital, Kalamazoo. She was born August 15, 1952 in Oklahoma to John and Mary Lee (Martin) Ervin. Julia and Buzz moved from Oklahoma City, OK, in 2010 to pursue a life-long dream of growing organic flowers and herbs at a greenhouse on CR 352 outside of Decatur, MI. Julia spent most of her working life with non-profit organizations, retiring as Administrative Director of an organization providing individualized support for people with severe disabilities to assist them in becoming fully integrated, contributing members of their communities. She was at one time on the board of Decatur Human Services, and although not currently serving, still assisted them with many projects. She was most active with Michigan Organic Food and Farm Alliance (MOFFA), was Administrative Coordinator until her second retirement, and most recently served on their board. Julia’s knowledge and passion for organic farming was widespread and shared through organizing educational presentations around the State and helping to edit a book with Maynard Kaufman on the history of the “Organic Movement in Michigan”. Julia loved to garden, sew, was an avid reader, and never lost the desire for travel. Julia is survived by husband Nelson (Buzz) of 40 years, numerous cousins, and many friends. Interment will be held privately. Memorials in Julia’s name may be sent to MOFFA, P.O. Box 26102, Lansing, MI 48909-6102 OR Decatur Human Services, 102 South Phelps Street, Decatur, MI 49045.
