Lydia's Obituary

Lydia (Ruppel) Ruhno, 95, of St. Joseph, passed away Sunday, September 26, 2021 at Pine Ridge Nursing Center in Stevensville. A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, October 1, 2021 at 2:00 P.M. at Starks & Menchinger Chapel, 2650 Niles Rd., St. Joseph, MI with Reverend Measel officiating. Burial will follow at North Shore Memory Gardens in Coloma. Friends are invited to visit one hour before the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family, and contributions to local charity will be made at a later date. Those wishing to share a memory or sign the guest book online may do so at www.starks-menchinger.com. Lydia was born November 9, 1925 to Christian and Marie (York) Ruppel in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. She had three brothers; Otto, Chris, and David Ruppel and two sisters; Marie Engel and Emma Herman, who have all preceded her in death. The only survivor from her generation is a sister-in-law, Donice Ruppel, David’s wife. On August 8, 1945 Lydia married Eugene Ruhno, her high school sweetheart, when he returned from the war. There are four surviving children; Jo Ann Giltner of Florida, Ronald Gene Ruhno (Joanne) of Cadillac, Sue Ellen Evett (Gary) of Coloma, and Debra Kay Lawrick (Vic) of St. Joseph She also left behind four grandsons-David (Kellie), Ryan (Angie) and Aaron Ruhno, and Drew Lawrick; two great-granddaughters; Katie and Emily Ruhno, and a number of nieces and nephews who she loved dearly. Lydia and Gene loved to winter in Florida after they retired. She was the cook for her special kids at Blossomland Learning Center on Lakeview Drive in St. Joseph, until she retired in 1985. Her husband died 16 years ago and she filled her days reading, doing puzzles, and sewing quilts. She will be remembered as a kind and loving person, strong willed, but gentle in nature, and finally home in heaven.
