Jewel's Obituary

Jewel Elaine Jones, 84, of Berrien Springs, passed away on Tuesday, August 17, 2021, at Old Farm Assisted Living. Arrangements have been entrusted to Starks & Menchinger Chapel. A Celebration of Life Homegoing Service will be held on Saturday, September 4, 2021, at 10AM at Frist Presbyterian Church 475 Green Ave., Benton Harbor. Memorial contributions may be made to the Eddie Whitfield Scholarship by contacting Second Baptist Church in Benton Harbor. Those wishing to leave an online condolence may do so at www.starks-menchinger.com. Jewel was born January 8, 1937, in Chicago, IL to Eddie Whitfield Sr. and Nellie (Gilchrist) Whitfield. She graduated from Benton Harbor High School in 1955 where she played in the Tiger Marching Band and sang in the BHHS Choir. Jewel was employed as a Department Manager by Sears for several years where she worked in Benton Harbor and Lombard, Illinois. She earned a certificate from Lake Michigan College and worked as an Xray Technician. Lastly, she worked for Whirlpool as a National Accountant Specialist Rep for many years before her retirement. Also, she had a strong faith in God and was a long-time member of the First Presbyterian Church in Benton Harbor and was a Ruling Elder. One of the highlights of her life was her trip to Africa with the church. She sang in the church choir and enjoyed staying socially active in her community. She worked in the Benton Harbor Schools Grandmother Program, was on the Library Board, was a member of Charms, Inc., a civic organization, Strong Women of Faith, which is a women’s health support group, and was a member of the Insets, a black social club. Jewel loved to go shopping and was a fashion trend setter. She enjoyed blessing her nieces and nephews of two generations with entertainment and travel. And, most of all she loved her family and friends immensely and the love was reciprocated by them all. Jewel is survived by her son, Stephen Jones; siblings: Joy Darlene Hawkins, Jolita Allene Smith, Edda Dickerson and Steward Whitfield and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins that she loved dearly. She was preceded in death by her parents, Eddie and Nellie Whitfield and her brothers, Eddie Whitfield and William Whitfield.
