April 30th, 1942 - August 27th, 2021

Joel's Obituary

Joel Clarke Gibbons was born in Boston, Massachusetts but was raised in Winnetka, Illinois where his family relocated. Following college he went on to earn several advanced degrees: graduating with a Physics degree from Georgetown University, a Ph.D in Mathematics from Northwestern University and finally an MBA and a Ph.D in Economics from the University of Chicago. From there he proceeded to teach math and economics at Benedictine College, the University of Chicago, and the Illinois Institute of Technology as a means to support his young and growing family. He worked extensively in the Financial sector as an executive portfolio manager, continued his academic interests and published numerous articles and several books on political and economic topics. However Mr. Gibbons' passion and creativity extended beyond these topics to include: playing music (he was accomplished at both piano and guitar); performing (with his brother at folk gigs during the '60's); and singing with a local barbershop quartet. His deeply held faith led to his position as a 4th degree member of the Knights of Columbus and a spot as a tenor in the choir at Saint Joseph’s Parish. Joel is survived by his wife, Crispina, his three children: Eileen, Marcus and Hugh, and five adoring grandchildren: Timothy, Evelyne, Xavier, Dahlia and Amelia. Visitation will be held on Friday, September 3rd at 9 a.m. at Starks & Menchinger Chapel, 2650 Niles Rd, St. Joseph, Michigan, followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a,m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 211 Church Street, St. Joseph, Michigan. Burial will follow 12:00 P.M. Saturday, September 4 at All Saints Cemetery, 700 N. River Rd., Des Plains, IL 60015.
