Michael's Obituary
Michael Anthony Greene, beloved husband, son, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, nephew, cousin and friend, entered into eternal rest on Monday, July 19, 2021. Michael was born January 23, 1968 in Hickory NC to the union of Horace Mann Greene and Verneather Warren Greene. He confessed his love for Christ at a tender age and was a member of Greater Harvest Missionary Baptist Church, founded by the late Reverend Willie Warren (Carrie). Michael was reared in a home where love, faith, kindness, hard work and generosity to others was taught, and he continued these qualities all throughout his life.
Michael attended Buchanan High School, graduating in the class of 1987. While attending Buchanan High he made All State in football, basketball and track. He held the long jump record for over 25 years, jumping over 23 feet. Michael led the state of Michigan in rushing yards in 1986, which earned him the title of Best Running Back in the State of Michigan. In 1987, he was named Berrien County Athlete of the Year (best in the county); and, in his senior year, he won the Blue Chip All American High School Football Award. Michael’s favorite sport was football, which he loved playing! However, he could have an engaging conversation about any sport.
After graduating high school, Michael continued his journey by attending Triton College where he played football and received his Associates Degree in General Studies in May 1989. During his two years at Triton he was the Junior College All American, rushing over 1,000 yards each year; and, in his freshman year, he was recognized for rushing the most yards of all junior college running backs. Michael then furthered his higher education by attending Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Here he received his Bachelor of Applied Science degree in Criminal Justice and graduated in 1993. While attending Western he was a two-year starter, and was the star running back.
Michael had a long and lucrative career. He wanted to use his degree to help teach troubled children appropriate social skills and be a role model for them. He joined the Family and Children’s Center in South Bend, Indiana as a Youth Treatment Specialist Supervisor and worked there for 12 years. Michael then moved on to the Marion Superior Court System as an adult probation officer. Following that, for 9 years, he worked for Gallahue in Indianapolis as a Care Coordinator for youth and their families. He went on to work at Indiana Mentor Network as a case manager, and he also worked for Subaru; however, his love was mentoring and counseling. In his final days, he was doing what he loved most working for the Indianapolis Public School System.
We, the family, find comfort in knowing that Michael is resting with the Risen Savior. He will forever live in the hearts of his Wife, Cynthia Greene of Indianapolis IN, Father, Horace Mann Greene of Hickory, NC, Mother, Verneather Greene of Augusta, GA, godmother Donna Fisher of Buchanan, MI, five children, Nicholas Greene, Litterial (Anthony) Greene, and Chelsea Greene all of Chicago, IL, Jaylen Greene of California, Savannah Greene of Detroit, MI, and his three lovely grandchildren. Michael is survived by his four sisters, Lori Ann Jackson (Al) of South Bend, IN, Teresa Greene of Durham, NC, Lisa R. Greene Tucker of Augusta, GA, and Anitra Jones of Niles, MI. He is also survived by his three brothers, George Greene of Kalamazoo, MI, Kevin Oates of Hickory, NC, and Lanny Fisher of Buchanan, MI, as well as a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
A celebration of life service will be held at 11 am on Friday, July 30, 2021, at Mt. Zion Church of God in Christ, 1102 Red Bud Tr. N., Buchanan with Bishop Eddie L. Miller officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Ridge Cemetery, Buchanan. Visitation will take place two hours prior, from 9-11 am, also at the church.
