Victor de Caneva

Victor A. de Caneva passed away peacefully at his home at the age of 96 with his wife Lucia and granddaughter Marie by his side on March 8th 2021. Lovingly called “Vic,” “Dad,” “Grandpa” and “Coach D” by those who knew him best, he was a true Renaissance man with a spirit of love, fortitude and generosity. Born in Fiume, Italy (now Rijeka, Croatia) on June 9th 1924, Victor met the love of his life, Lucia, at a New Year’s party in Trieste, Italy, where they married and first lived. Together they navigated life from Italy to the US where Victor established himself as a successful business owner, enthusiastic family man, and mentor for his young soccer players. Victor is survived by his wife of 69 years, Lucia de Caneva, granddaughter and spouse Anna and Peter Hamburger, granddaughter Marie de Caneva, great granddaughter Sofia Hamburger and brother Richard de Caneva. He is preceded in death by his parents Ricardo de Caneva and Albina Pisculich, brother Bruno de Caneva, and his two sons, Robert and Bruno de Caneva. A Catholic funeral mass will be held in honor of Victor on Saturday April 24th 2021 at 11:00AM EST at St. Mary of the Lake Church in New Buffalo, MI. In lieu of flowers, the family asks those who wish to express sympathy to consider making a donation to cancer research in the de Caneva name.
