Steven's Obituary

Steven “Steve” Newitt, 64, of Dowagiac, passed away Wednesday, March 24, 2021, at Memorial Hospital in South Bend, Indiana. Arrangements have been entrusted to Clark Chapel, Dowagiac Steve was born June 22, 1956, in Buchanan, to William and Betty Jean (Bowker) Newitt. He graduated from Galien High School in 1975. Steve earned a bachelors degree in political science and a bachelors degree in science. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy for four years, and the Army National Guard for 16 years, retiring in 2005. Steve was a hard worker, he worked as a Disability Examiner for the State of Michigan for over 12 years before his retirement in February of 2021. On January 14, 2012, he married Susan Newitt during the Niles Hunter Ice Festival in the Queen Ann Room at the Four Flags Hotel. Steve had a love for the outdoors, he loved riding his motorcycle, kayaking and spending time on the river. In his spare time, he enjoyed visiting Frankenmuth, and watching old war movies. Most of all he loved his family, especially his daughter, Hunter “Punkin” and grandchildren. Steve’s family and friends will always remember him for his witty personality and famous sayings, especially “don’t cloud the issue with useless facts”. Steven is survived by his wife, Susan Newitt; daughter, Hunter Newitt; step-children, Christy, Casey, Cadey, Cody and Cole; grandchildren, Christian, A.J., Bella, Abbie, Maya and Lucas; brother, Jim Newitt; former wife, Rana Lechlitner and long-time best friend, Bob Feifar. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Betty Newitt. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00AM on Tuesday, March 30, 2021, at the Community Evangelical Free Church, 120 E Bertrand Rd., Niles, with pastor James Wing officiating. A time of food and fellowship will follow the service at the church. Burial will take place at 2PM on Tuesday, March 30, 2021, at Galien Cemetery, 1642-1698 Pulaski Hwy, Galien with full Military Honors.
