Melinda "Linda" Sommers's Obituary

Melinda “Linda” Sommers, 102, of Stevensville, passed away on Sunday, February 28, 2021, at The Willows, St. Joseph. A celebration of life service will be held at 1 pm on Thursday, March 4, 2021, at Starks & Menchinger Chapel, 2650 Niles Rd., St. Joseph, with Pastor David Hills officiating. Burial will follow in Hickory Bluff Cemetery, Stevensville. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service, from 12 – 1 pm. Memorial contributions in Linda’s name may be made to Stevensville United Methodist Church, 5506 Ridge Rd., Stevensville. Those wishing to send a condolence online may do so at www.starks-menchinger.com. Linda was born on October 15, 1918, to Adolf and Bertha (Schott) Bettig in Benton Harbor. On November 20, 1941, she married Albert Sommers. Following the wedding, Albert was drafted and honorably served during WWII. They shared nearly fifty years of marriage before he passed on February 15, 1991. Professionally, Linda worked at Benton Harbor Basket Factory, Continental Can Company, New Products and the Musselman Factory, where she retired. Linda was a lifetime member at Stevensville United Methodist Church. She enjoyed bowling, reading – especially Grace Livingston Hill novels, listening to German music on her Phonograph and being in touch with her friends, whether talking over the phone or going out to dinner. Most of all, Linda cherished time spent with her family and had a servant’s heart, always helping others. Linda is survived by her many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Adolf and Bertha Bettig; beloved husband, Albert Sommers and siblings, Henry Bettig, Olga Gerdel and Elsie Wesner.
