Jim was born July 25, 1939, in Cassopolis, MI to Otto and Martha (Hartman) Sayer. He graduated from Dowagiac High School in 1957. On June 6, 1959 he married the love of his life, Janet Casey in Dowagiac. Jim worked for GTE as a field engineer for over 35 years before his retirement. Jim was a warm, friendly person and enjoyed socializing and being around friends and family. He was active in many local clubs and committees, with membership in the Dowagiac Lions and Elks Clubs. He served on several boards including the Board of Public Works, the Zoning Board, Woodlands Behavioral Healthcare Network Board, and the Cass County Transportation Authority. Additionally, Jim was a member of the Michigan National Guard from 1956-1964 and served as the Cass County Commissioner from 1996-2004. Jim loved to visit the casino and enjoyed playing poker and other card games with his friends and family. He regularly met with his buddies at Caruso’s “solving the world’s problems” over morning coffee and doughnuts. In his spare time, he could often be found watching old western and war movies. He had a love for old cars, especially ‘57 Chevy’s, and enjoyed traveling throughout the United States. One of his greatest enjoyments was playing the “Jolly Old Man” at Christmas time, visiting the young and young at heart at many schools and company holiday parties. Most of all he loved his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Jim is survived by his loving wife, Janet Sayer; children, Mike (Nancy) Sayer, Tim (Angie) Sayer and Lori (Tom) Bannow; 9 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; and sister, Pat Rife. He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Betty Daines and Marjorie Anglemyer.
