Nancy's Obituary

Nancy Diane (Morton) Carr of Saint Joseph passed away peacefully at home on January 11, 2021 after a nearly two-year courageous battle with cancer. Nancy was born on July 29, 1952 to Phillip and Irene (Mandro) Morton in Adrian, Michigan. She was a 1970 graduate of Benton Harbor High School, a 1974 graduate of Grand Valley State College, and earned master’s degrees from Michigan State University in Education and Western Michigan University in Speech & Language Pathology. She taught at Lake Michigan Catholic Schools for 3 years before transitioning to work at Imperial Printing until she decided to stay home to raise her children. Once her children were in school full-time, she returned to school herself to earn her degree in Speech & Language Pathology. She began her new career in Constantine in 1992, working for the St. Joseph County ISD until 2001. She then worked for Buchanan Community Schools until her retirement in 2017. Nancy is survived by her husband of 45 years, John, and children Heather of Sister Lakes, Spencer (Danielle) of Benton Harbor, and Trevor of St. Joseph, as well as her granddaughters Rowan and Linden Carr. She is also survived by her brother, Greg (Debra) Morton and their daughter, Jenna, of Byron Center and cousins Lori Dixon of Georgia and Tami Weaver of Florida. She also leaves behind her best friend and supporter, Angelika Hager. Nancy was preceded in passing by her parents Phil and Irene Morton. Nancy enjoyed raising her children and watching them succeed in school and sports, never missing an opportunity to watch them play the many sports that they participated in. She loved gardening, birdwatching, and traveling along the coast of Lake Michigan looking at the lighthouses and visiting the small towns along the way. We would like to thank the doctors and staff at Memorial Hospital in South Bend, especially Dr. Lui, Dr. Reid, and all the people in the Cancer Care Center, for their support during her treatment. We would also like to recognize Chris Glendening for her support while she was with us, and to express our appreciation for the help and guidance given to us by the team at Caring Circle of Lakeland. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, January 15, 2021, at 1:30pm, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 220 Church St., St. Joseph. Inurnment will follow at Riverview Cemetery. A celebration of life gathering will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Lake Michigan Catholic Schools, 915 Pleasant St., St. Joseph, Readiness Center at St. John Church, 347 Catalpa Ave., Benton Harbor, or the Berrien County Cancer Services, 3900 Hollywood Rd., St. Joseph.
