Michael's Obituary

Michael “Pops” Prieto, 71, of Decatur, passed away on Thursday, December 10, 2020 at his home. A Celebration of Life will take place on Wednesday, December 16, 2020 at 2 PM at Newell Chapel, 83313 M-51, Decatur, with Father Russell Homic officiating. Friends may visit with the family from 12PM until the time of the service at the funeral home. Out of respect for the family and guests in attendance masks and proper social distancing will be required. Memorial contribution may be made to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, www.donate.lls.org. Those wishing to leave an online condolence may do so at www.newellchapel.com. Michael was born on October 19, 1949, in East Chicago, Indiana Harbor, to George G. & Socorro (Ahedo) Prieto. He graduated from Washington High School in 1969. He continued his education by attending Purdue University where he earned a degree in Forestry Conservation, and Ivy Tech where he earned a degree in Computer Programing. Michael proudly served our country by enlisting in the United States Air Force. On May 19, 1978, Michael married the love of his life, Cathy Whitaker, in Hammond, IN. For 30 years, Michael worked as a Foreman for Norfolk & Southern Railroad Company. He absolutely loved his job and the relationships he formed with his Heavy Bridge Gang. Michael was also full of life, he had such a great sense of adventure which led him to waterskiing until he was in his 60’s, kayaking, riding his motorcycle whenever possible and fishing out on the lake. Another passion of his was racing R.C. cars, Michael enjoyed spending time with his family and friends competing against one another. However, what brought the most joy to him was his family. He loved his family more than anything and when asked what team/athlete he admired most his response was “My grandson are my heroes!” Michael is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Cathy, of Decatur; son, Armando (Ashley) Prieto of Decatur; grandsons, Emile, Michael and Ozzy; siblings, Dolores “Dodo” Kramer, George (Bobbi) Prieto, Rosie Smerdell, Janet Prieto and Katy (Jake) Mendez; numerous nieces & nephews; and his incredible RC family. Michael was preceded in death by his parents, George & Socorro; son, Michael Prieto; and siblings, William and Anthony Prieto and Ruth Aleman.
