Anita's Obituary

Anita Louise Smith, 78, of Dowagiac, passed away on Sunday, October 25, 2020. A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Friday, October 30, 2020 at 12 PM at Clark Chapel, 405 Center St., Dowagiac, with Pastor Melody Wallace officiating. Burial will follow at Mission Hills Memorial Gardens. Friends may visit with the family from 10 AM until the time of the service at the funeral home. Out of respect for the family and guests in attendance masks and proper social distancing will be required. Memorial contributions may be made to Clark Chapel. Those wishing to leave an online condolence may do so at www.clarkch.com. Anita was born on October 12, 1942, to Robert & Nancy (Dowling) Macomber in Jackson, MI. She was later raised by Charles & Louise Stewart. While attending elementary school she was taught in a one room school house located off of Indian Lake Rd., in Dowagiac. Anita married Daniel Everts and had her first children, Juanita and Randy. Later Anita wed Larry Hungerford, who has since preceded her in death, and gave birth to her daughter, Melody. On October 9, 1971, Anita married Robert Smith, and had Shelia and Robert, Smith Jr.. The two were happily married for nearly 38 years before his passing in 2009. For 40 years, Anita worked as a dietary aid in the kitchen for Memorial Hospital. While her children were in school, Anita worked as a crossing guard for Dowagiac Middle School and a teacher’s aide for the former McKinley School. One of her most memorable accomplishments was winning the mud wrestling championship at the Twin Lakes Fire Department for their 4th of July celebration in the 1980’s. Anita enjoyed playing cards, BINGO, dice games, going to the casino and singing karaoke, specifically Elvis. She always went to the Pokagon Band pow-wows and danced in the sacred circle and eat strawberry shortcake fry bread. She was a proud member of First Christian Church and The Moose Lodge #933. She would also spend her time at the Cass County Area on Aging helping with their euchre tournaments. However, what meant the most to her was spending time with her family. Anita loved taking her family to various festivals and the Blossomtime Parade. She also was an avid fan of the Dowagiac Chieftains, cheering on and supporting her grandchildren’s team for over 17 years. Anita is survived by her children, Randy Everts, Melody Pillow and Shelia (David) Harris; grandchildren, Nichole Smith, Matthew (girlfriend, Heather Davis) Horvath, Jr., Rebecca White, Kelly Harris, Mindy Schneider, and Ashley Pillow; eight great-grandchildren; siblings, Rona (John) Morrison, Darlene Nelson, and Drummond (Jane) Macomber; and first husband, Daniel Evert. She was preceded in death by her birth and raised parents, Nancy & Robert Macomber and Charles & Louise Stewart; second and third husband, Larry Hungerford & Robert Smith; and children, Robert Smith, Jr., and Juanita Everts.
