Robert's Obituary

Robert Donald DeFreez, 91, of Galien, passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 22, 2020 at his home in Galien. The family will receive guests from 5-7pm, Tuesday, October 27, 2020 at Swem Chapel, 301 W. Front St., Buchanan. A celebration of life service will take place at 1pm, Wednesday, October 28, 2020 at Swem Chapel, Pastor David Mitchell officiating. Burial with military honors to follow at Galien Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the Humane Society of Southwest Michigan, www.humanesocietyswm.org. Robert was born on April 16, 1929 in Racine, WI to Richard and Elizabeth (Abel) DeFreez. Robert always spoke fondly of his younger years out west, where he was a miner, as well as his time in Alaska building roads. He was a proud Army veteran, serving in Korea from 1951-53 as an ambulance driver. He met and married Constance Hunsberger. He was always willing to lend a hand to his brothers on the family farm, and could fix almost anything. You could always find Robert in his shed, tinkering, with his beloved German Shepherds. Robert is survived by his daughters, Susan (Dale) Seyfred, Julie DeFreez, Vicki Flinchum, and Elizabeth (the late Scott) Nelson; his step-children, Ann Crumley, and Mick (Amy) Crumley; his grandchildren, Josh (Sara), Heather (TJ), Robert, Vaughn, Jake, Hannah, Mason, Marguerite, and Gabrielle; and six great grandchildren. Robert is preceded in death by his wife, Constance DeFreez; his siblings, Richard, Charles, Donald, Katherine, and Lina; and his parents.
