Dennis Newell

Dennis Newell, 71, of Decatur, Michigan, passed away Wednesday, September 30, 2020 at his home. A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Monday at 1:00 PM, at Newell Chapel, 83313 M-51 Highway, Decatur, MI, officiated by James Abshagen. Burial will follow at Lakeside Cemetery in Decatur. Visitation will be Sunday from 1:00 P.M. to 5:00 P.M. at Newell Chapel. Memorials may be made to V.F.W. of Decatur or Decatur Human Services. Friends wishing to leave a condolence may do it at www.newellchapel.com. Dennis was born in Chicago, IL, on October 23, 1948. His parents through his life were H. Wesley & Jayne (Kingsbury) Newell. Dennis graduated from Decatur High School in 1966 and received a Bachelor of Science degree from Western Michigan University and a Mortuary Science degree from Wisconsin Institute of Mortuary Science. He returned to Decatur to serve the community at Newell Funeral Home for over 50 Years as a Funeral Director / Owner. On July 16, 1983 he married the love of his life, Prudence Wattles, at the Presbyterian Church in Decatur. He enjoyed helping people in Decatur and giving back to the community. He was past president of Decatur Athletic Boosters, Decatur Lions Club, and a member of Michigan Funeral Directors Association. He was an avid golfer for over 50 years, he bowled at Rainbow Lanes and was a Notre Dame fan. He is survived by his wife, Prudence; one daughter, Heather (Bobby) Hart of Grand Rapids and one son Patrick (Marci) Yeider of Decatur; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a special nephew, Christopher Kovalcik; sister, Patte Newell and a sister-in-law, Stephanie Johnson.
