Lois Marie Hatfield

Lois Marie Hatfield (Lolo) of Calumet City, IL passed away Friday, May 15, 2020 at Woodland Terrace in Bridgman after a long battle with dementia/Alzheimer’s with her daughter holding her hand. A Private Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, May 29, 2020 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in St. Joseph with Fr. Thomas McNally officiating. Burial will follow around 11:00 A.M. at Hickory Bluff Cemetery in Stevensville those wishing to join the graveside service are welcome. Memorials may be made to The Salvation Army, Chicago, IL or Caring Circle Hospice, St. Joseph, MI. Those wishing to share a memory of Lois online may do so at www.starks-menchinger.com Lois was born November 18, 1930 in Chicago, IL to Ernest & Estelle (Beland) Cummings. She graduated from Hirsch High School. On September 23, 1950 she married Charles Hatfield Jr. at St. Laurence Parish in Chicago. Lois and Chuck enjoyed 52 years together before his passing. Family was most important in her life. As a loving wife and mother, Lois took great pride in nurturing her four children, Cheryl, Chuck, Chris & Curt. She enjoyed teaching her daughter to cook and bake, and as the wife of a Chicago Firefighter working two jobs, she was constantly driving and cheering on her three active sons at athletic events. When her adult children began their own families, she was thrilled. Lois loved being a grandmother and said, “As much as you love your own children, there’s nothing like being a grandmother.” Then the ‘Greats’ started to come and she never ceased enjoying each one of them until close to her death. Called Lolo by most, she was a truly amazing woman. Although the youngest, Lolo took care of all in her family. She was especially close to her mother and protective of her growing up in their alcoholic home. Always wanting to be a Catholic, Lois converted at 18 over her father’s objections. Among the first families at Our Lady of Knock Parish in Calumet City, she was extremely active in parish life…faithfully attending Mass and services, helping at activities, singing in the funeral choir. She was also active in the Altar & Rosary Society and the OLOK Seniors Group. She was fun & funny, witty, energetic, caring and loving. Lolo loved to cook and to bake cakes, pies, apple slices, but Chocolate Chip Cookies were her forte. She baked three times a week and probably baked enough cookies to circle the globe! She took baked goods & cookies! to the sick and homebound, parish events, friends, and sent cookies home with her children’s friends. Anyone stopping by got a cup of tea and homemade snack. Lois is survived by her children: Cheryl (Earl) Williams, Christopher (Reta) Hatfield, and Curtis (Nancy) Hatfield; grandchildren Kristine (Robert) Hall, Aimee (Paul) Foster, Michelle (Jason) Krcmery, Christina Hatfield, Alex (Mercedes) Hatfield, Danielle Hatfield, Bradley (Maureen) Hatfield and Brett (Jennifer) Hatfield; great- grandchildren: Bobby, Violette (fiancé Cory), Tess, Katie, Molly, Emma, Colin, Drew, Madelyn, Raylan, Charley Jo, Quinn, Lucas, Paige, Fiona and Victor. Lois was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son Charles Hatfield III, sister Marion Brouillette and brother Ernest Cummings. Special thanks to Tonya, Todd and all the staff of Woodland Terrace for the love and excellent care given to Lois in her decade plus there.
