Donald James Smith

Donald James (Smitty) Smith, 88, of Dowagiac, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 21, 2020 at his daughter’s home. Donald’s life began on July 12, 1931, the son of Virgil and Angela (Ptaszkiewicz) Smith. He graduated from Dowagiac High School and proudly served his country during the Korean War. He was united in marriage to Leona Mozelle Duncan on December 30, 1955. Donald worked in the door and glazing industry the majority of his life. He held various positions at Cupples in Dowagiac, MI and New Brunswick, NJ. Donald was a long time employee of Special-Lite, Inc. of Decatur, MI. He worked there from its inception in many roles, including field service and production management. After retirement he enjoyed golfing, fishing and deer hunting at his family cabin up north. Donald is survived by his children, James (Linda) Smith of Dowagiac, Lori (Charlie) Van Voorhis of Chandler, AZ, Anne (Ernie) Edgerly of Hartford, Nancy (Robert) Staley of Dowagiac and Alan (Krista) Smith of Dowagiac; ten grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren; and sisters, Patricia (Ollie) Shaer of Dowagiac and Kathleen (Roger) Williamson of Conway, AR. Donald was preceded in death by his wife Mozelle; siblings, Marylin Wilson, Robert Smith, Richard Smith and Gerald Smith; and great-granddaughter Caroline Mozelle Paul. A private family service will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice at Home - The Caring Circle.
