Paul Makay

Paul Gerard Makay, 64, of Decatur, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, October 24, 2019 at Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo. The family will receive guests from 4-6pm, Sunday, October 27, 2019 at Newell Chapel, 83313 M51, Decatur. A memorial service will be held at 1pm, Monday, October 28, 2019 at Newell Chapel, with Pastor Katie Hartwell officiating. Memorial contributions may be given to Lakeview Foundation, www.lakeviewfoundationmi.org. Paul was born October 4, 1955 in Dowagiac to Michael and Dorothy (Copeman) Makay. He graduated from Decatur High School, class of 1974. He started his career in general construction with his brothers, but eventually started his own business, Makay Construction, Inc. in 1978. Paul was a skilled glazer and craftsman who always was working on a project, and always willing to lend a hand when needed. Paul enjoyed being in nature, road trips to Kentucky, and especially being “Pops” to his daughters and grandsons. He will be dearly missed by his wife, Karen (Dahms) Makay, whom he married September 25, 1982 in Decatur; his daughters, Katelin Makay of Decatur, and Margaret (Dr. Timothy) Joseph; his grandsons, Liam and Wyatt Joseph of Rochester, MN.; and his siblings, Loretta (Jim) Doroh, Tony (Nira) Makay, and Geri (Rob) Edwards and many nieces, nephews, and friends. He was preceded in death by his brother, Ramsay (Jane Hayes) Makay, and his parents.
