Betty's Obituary
Betty Schreuder went home to be with her lord on September 28, 2019 at the age of 90. She was born in Chicago on March 16, 1929 to John and Elizabeth Puhl who preceded her in death. She married Edward Schreuder on June 26, 1948 and they enjoyed 68 years of marriage before he passed away in March 2016. A beloved daughter, Judith Bartels, also preceded Betty in death in October 2016 after a valiant struggle with cancer.
Betty was a member of the Decatur First Reformed Church where she had played piano and organ and taught Sunday School. Betty graduated from Decatur High School and Western Michigan University where she earned Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in education and counseling. She taught elementary school and did elementary counseling for 37 years with Decatur Public Schools.
Most of all, Betty was a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She and Ed treasured the time spent with their grandchildren, and she and Ed both enjoyed travelling and took many trips.
Betty is survived by her daughter, Pamela (Stephen) Wilcox; her son-in-law Dennis Bartels; grandchildren Stephanie (Shawn) Conover, Courtney Bartels, Blake Wilcox and Clark Wilcox; and her great-grandchildren Reilly and Samantha Conover. She is also survived by her sister, Eleanor (Norris) Smith, and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at the First Reformed Church in Decatur on Saturday, November 2 at 2:00 p.m. preceded by visitation with the family beginning at 1:00 p.m. Memorial contributions can be made to Decatur Public School Elementary Counselling.
