John's Obituary
John Sterling Hall, Jr., 78, of Dowagiac, passed away on Monday, September 2, 2019 at Cass County Medical Care Facility in Cassopolis.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Friday, Sept. 6, at 11:00 AM, at Clark Chapel, 450 Center St., Dowagiac and officiated by Pastor Dan Gregor of Sumnerville Bible Baptist Church where John was a member. Friends may visit with the family on Thursday, September 5, from 5:00PM until 7:00PM at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Grace Christian School or St. Jude Children's Hospital. John, affectionately called "Butts" by his siblings, was born October 14, 1940, in Los Angeles, California to the late John S. and Mary (Timbrook) Hall, Sr. John Graduated from La Puente High School in 1958, after which he served in the United States Army with Infantry 9th Battle Group Company A 3rd Brigade from '62 to '65. Then served with the reserves until '68 in Germany. After returning to the States he married and then studied Bible at Appalachian Bible College. After completing studies there he moved to Dowagiac where he studied at Southwestern Michigan College and earned his Associates Degree in Aviation Mechanics. Then returned to California where he worked with Operating Engineers building roads and highways until 1985, at which time they permanently relocated the family to Dowagiac. He was well known for his hot dog cart that he owned and operated for many years in downtown Dowagiac as the Connoisseur of Hot Dogs. In his spare time, he enjoyed wood carving, gold panning, baking pies for Foodies and cake decorating. Most of all he loved his family and he will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
John is survived by his children, Becca (Scott) Phelps, Bethany Hall and Matthew (Keemen Dayhuff) Hall; grandchildren, Kiefer Hall, Joshua Hall, Camrin Hall, Drake (Sarah) Confer, Morgan (Marcus) Fragale, Madison Phelps and Micah Hall; 4 great-grandchildren, siblings, Mary (Andy) Gonzalez, Martha Stratton, Bette Kortepeter and Joe Hall; numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his son Nathan Hall "Nato" and his brother Bobby Hall.
