Dr. Chung was born July 18, 1944 in South Korea to Won Gil & Ohk Chong (Pak) Chung. On February 23, 1969 he married the former Song Cha (Elizabeth) Pak in South Korea. After immigrating to the United States in 1973 and doing his medical training in Kansas City, MO, he settled into private practice in psychiatry in Battle Creek, Michigan in 1977. In 1984 he moved to San Diego, CA to start a new practice. During that time, he felt a calling for the ministry and entered the Andrews University Theological Seminary, where he earned his Master of Divinity in 1990. He accepted a pastoral position at the Chicago Korean SDA church, where he enjoyed serving as the senior pastor for 5 years. Over the last 20 years he found great fulfillment working with the inmates at the Bellamy Creek Correctional Facility in Ionia, Michigan and serving as the associate pastor of the Grand Rapids Korean Seventh-day Adventist Church. When Joseph wasn’t working, he enjoyed playing tennis, reading, walking, and always sharing the Gospel.
Joseph is survived by his wife Elizabeth; his children-John (Sungita) Chung of Niles, Lily (Sanjay) Patel of Berrien Springs, Daniel (Diane) Chung of Blue Ridge, GA; seven grandchildren-Nathaniel, Caleb & Noah Chung, Isabella & Ava Patel, Danielle & Elijah Chung; his sister Wendy (Jason) Kim of Berrien Springs; and many nephews, nieces, and cousins.
