John's Obituary

John P. (Jack) Campbell of Brooksville, FL – formerly of New Buffalo, MI, died on April 7, 2016 at the age of 84 years. Arrangements have been entrusted to Sommerfeld Chapel, 15 N. Barton St., New Buffalo, MI.   Jack was born on Oct. 7, 1931 in Scranton, PA, and was raised in Rome, NY. He played football and ice hockey while attending Rome Free Academy in Rome, NY. Shortly after graduation in 1951 he joined the U.S. Marine Corps and served during the Korean Conflict where he was awarded the Purple Heart. Jack met his wife Pat while they were both attending Michigan State University and they were married on January 14, 1956. While residing in New York, Jack raised Alaskan Husky Sled Dogs and raced them throughout the East Coast, Canada and the Midwest. Upon moving to Michigan in 1976 he became an avid fisherman spending many hours on Lake Michigan and the pier at St. Joseph, MI. He was a loyal fan of the New Buffalo Bisons and attended basketball and volleyball games and could be seen at many soccer, cross country and football games with his loyal red border collie dog – Ginger.   Jack is survived by his wife Patricia (Shubert) Campbell; four daughters – Beverly (Robert) Barclay, Debra (Al) Arnone, Robyn (Louis) Sari and Michele (Steve) Ripley; two sons – John Jr. (Delynn Kish) and Joseph Campbell; fourteen grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; three sisters – Marlene (Jerry) Closinski, Betty (John) Zullo and Karen Schlicher; two brothers – Bill (Jan Williams) Campbell and Larry (Marilyn Slocum) Campbell; and many nieces and nephews.   A Memorial Mass will be held on May 23, 2016 at 11:00 A.M. at St. Mary of the Lake Church, 718 W. Buffalo St., New Buffalo, MI. Friends may visit with the family one hour prior to service time, from 10:00-11:00 a.m. at the church. Interment will follow at Pine Grove Cemetery in New Buffalo.
