Joyce Marie Underwood

Joyce M. Underwood, 71, of New Buffalo, died at St. Anthony Memorial Hospital, on Sunday December 27, 2009. Arrangements have been entrusted with Sommerfeld Chapel in New Buffalo, MI.Joyce was born June 2, 1938 in Michigan City, IN to Fred and Phyllis (Krieger) Gropp. On June 15, 1957 in New Buffalo at the United Methodist Church, she married James Carl Underwood. Joyce worked at the New Buffalo Elementary School as a cook for 30 years. She was a member of the Moose Lodge #980 of Michigan City. Joyce had breakfast at the Wheel Inn everyday with her friends. She was also an avid bingo player. But most of all Joyce loved her family, especially spending time with her grand and great grand children. Joyce is survived by her husband – James ‘Jimmy'; her children – Carl Underwood of New Buffalo, Ron (Sue) Underwood of New Buffalo, and Cheryl (John) Kalinowski of New Buffalo; her seven grandchildren – Cristi, Jacob, Jonathon, Brittany, Johnny, Jenna and Sarah; two great grandchildren – Isabelle and Ella; a brother – Allen (Sheila) Gropp of Berrien Springs; and numerous nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents – Fred and Phyllis, and a sister – Joan Mazac.A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Wednesday, December 30, 11:00am(EST), at the Sommerfeld Chapel in New Buffalo, with Pastor James Whitman officiating. Visitation is on Tuesday, December 29, from 5:00-8:00pm(EST), at the funeral home. The Women of the Moose will conduct services on Tuesday evening at 7:45pm (EST).
