Mary Elizabeth McConnell, 90, of La Porte, passed away on Thursday, September 13, 2012, at La Porte Hospital. Arrangements have been entrusted with Sommerfeld Chapel, New Buffalo.Mary was born on November 16, 1921, in Coeburn, Virginia, to Shade and Mattie (Sturgil) Dingus. She married Ceburn McConnell in Pikesburg, Kentucky, on July 29, 1939. Mary had been an inspector at Raytheon in Michigan City. She was a member of Bible Baptist Church in New Buffalo. Mary enjoyed sewing, reading, and gardening. She was well-known for making her beautiful quilts.Mary is survived by her sons, Charles (Sue) McConnell, La Porte, IN, Kenneth McConnell, Kerrville, Texas, daughter, Judy (Clint) Barnes, Rathdrum, Idaho; grandchildren, Laura Barnes and Cynthia McConnell; 3 great-grandchildren; brothers, John (Jeweleen) Dingus, Colburn, VA , Shade (Barbara) Dingus, Jr., New Buffalo. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Ceburn; brothers, Ted, Frank, Donald. and Joe Dingus and her sisters, Margot Shuler, Louise Honacker, Stella Stine, Leafy Brewer and Beaulah Cope. A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Tuesday, September 18, 2012 at 11:00 A.M. at the Sommerfeld Chapel, 15 N. Barton St., New Buffalo, with Pastor James Bouslog officiating. Burial will follow at Pine Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Monday, September 17, 2012 from 6:00-8:00 P.M. at the funeral home.
