Bette's Obituary

Bette Jean Heinz, 84, died peacefully on December 20 at her home in New Buffalo, Mich., surrounded by her family and the prayers of many dear friends.Bette was born December 7, 1928, in Michigan City, Ind., to Curtis and Beatrice (Thorsbakkan) Nelson. After graduating from Elston High School in Michigan City in 1946, she married Richard H. Heinz on Dec. 23, 1947, in Santa Monica, Calif. Richard preceded her in death on Dec. 19, 1997. From 1948 to 1952, Bette was a sales clerk and model for Blackmonds Jewelry Store in Michigan City. After various clerical jobs, she began working as a real estate agent in the New Buffalo area with Ritter Real Estate. Bette eventually purchased Ritter Real Estate, and as broker, opened the local Century 21 franchise. Bette won many real estate awards and would change plans at any time to go show local properties. She loved fashion and that carried over into house styles and home decorating.She was an active member of St. Mary’s parish, serving as a Eucharistic Minister, a member of the Altar and Rosary Society, and a volunteer with the parish’s RCIA program. She and Dick were longtime members of the New Buffalo Yacht Club, and Bette was very involved in the New Buffalo community, from fundraising for the March of Dimes to assisting with other local charity events. She was also a member of the River Valley Senior Center.Bette enjoyed walks on the beach, New Buffalo sunsets, classical music, shopping for antiques, looking at houses, and spending time with her friends and family, especially her great-grandchildren. She will be remembered for her kind nature, willingness to help others, and strong faith.She is survived by her son, Richard (Jane) Heinz of Gladstone, Mich.; two grandchildren — Kirsten Heinz, of Escanaba, Mich., and Kelly (Lee) Cole of Hillsdale, Mich.; and three great-grandchildren. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Raymond and John Nelson.Bette and her family want to thank Hospice at Home and JNR Senior Care Management of LaPorte for their compassionate care during Bette’s illness. Rhonda, Pat, and Sharon, you will forever be in our hearts for your gentle care and love.A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on December 24 at 10:00 a.m. EST at St. Mary of the Lake Catholic Church, New Buffalo, with Fr. Craig Lusk officiating. Interment will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery, New Buffalo. The family will receive friends for visitation from 2:00 to 4:00 on December 23 at Sommerfeld Chapel, New Buffalo. A Rosary will be said at 3:30. A memorial Mass and luncheon will also be held on May 4, 2013, at St. Mary’s, beginning at 11:00 a.m. for those unable to attend her service on December 24. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are suggested to the Altar and Rosary Society of St. Mary of the Lake Catholic Church.
