Miriam's Obituary

Miriam Kastil, 68, died of complications from myelofribrosis at Lakeland Hospital in Saint Joseph, MI, on Monday, December 9, 2013. Miriam was born on October 21, 1945, on a train near Lodz, Poland. Her mother, Cecelia Sacher, a German refugee, and her stepfather, Sam Brenner, settled in Northbrook, IL. Miriam graduated from Glenbrook North High School and attended Northwestern University. A master chef and baker, Miriam eventually moved to Union Pier, MI and channeled her formidable culinary skills into Sweet William, the Lakeside, MI catering firm which she established with her son, Douglas, who survives her. Signature offerings included chicken potpies and beef bourguignon, lemon tarts and toffee cookies. Miriam’s many friends fondly recall her generosity, quick wit, sense of style, and hard work. She loved all dogs and was a tireless fundraiser for arts-related, political, and charitable organizations. Many, many people benefitted from her friendship. A private burial service was held at Shalom Memorial Park in Arlington Heights, IL; local arrangements were handled by Sommerfeld Chapel in New Buffalo, MI. A memorial gathering is being planned for a later date. Donations may be made in Miriam’s memory to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital. Friends wishing to leave the family a message of condolence may do so at www.sommerfeldchapel.com
