Daniel P. Donnelly, 69, of New Buffalo, MI passed away at St. Anthony Hospital in Michigan City, IN on Thurs, April 9, 2015. Arrangements have been entrusted to Sommerfeld Chapel in New Buffalo, MI.   Dan was born on Jan. 17, 1946 in Evergreen Park, IL to John and Ruth (Decker) Donnelly. He served his country in the U.S. Army-Military Police, being discharged as a Staff Sergeant. Dan was a 1968 graduate from Lewis College in Romeoville, IL, receiving a bachelor’s degree in Social Studies. On July 20, 1968 in Westchester, IL he married Mary Ellen Sloan. Dan owned and operated the People’s Insurance Agency in New Buffalo from 1980-2013. He was very active in the New Buffalo community – he was past president of the New Buffalo Township Public Library; he was a volunteer for ‘Help for South West Michigan’; Dan was very involved with both Little League Baseball and Girl’s Softball and coached several teams; he also was the first soccer coach at St. Mary’s; Dan was a member of St. Mary-St. Agnes churches; he was Chairman of the St. Mary of the Lake Summer Festival for many years; he was a former vice president of the Sunset Shores Homeowner’s Association; Dan loved people and helped willingly and eagerly wherever he could. He will be greatly missed by his family and many friends.   Dan is survived by his wife of nearly 47 years – Mary; his children – Meghan (Steve) Herzic of Tinley Park, IL, Sarah (Edward) Ziesmer of New Buffalo, Therese Donnelly of Three Oaks, Jonathan (Jennifer Vitale) Donnelly of Buchanan, Peter (Kate) Donnelly of St. Charles, IL, Mark Donnelly of New Buffalo, Patrick Donnelly of New Buffalo, and Stephen (Hanna) Donnelly of Chicago, IL; grandchildren – Emily, Lee, Hannah, Caden, Samuel and Luke; sister – Mary (Michael) Kelly of Oak Lawn, IL; and a brother – John (Sue Meyer) Donnelly of Carmel, CA. He is preceded in death by his parents – John and Ruth Donnelly.   A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Mon., April 13, 11:00 AM, at St. Mary of the Assumption, 28 W. Ash St., Three Oaks, MI. Burial will follow at Pine Grove Cemetery, New Buffalo. Visitation is on Sun., April 12, from 2:00-6:00 PM, at the Sommerfeld Chapel, 15 N. Barton St., New Buffalo, MI. A wake service will conclude the visitation on Sunday at 5:45pm at the funeral home. Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to the New Buffalo Township Public Library.
