Laura's Obituary
Laura Frances Gardner Magro, 90, began life June 20, 1924 and left this life May 7, 2015 to join her husband Frank J. Magro and too numerous to count relatives and friends. Arrangements have been entrusted to Sommerfeld Chapel in New Buffalo.
Laura was born in Carrol County, VA to Loyd and Margie (Hampton) Gardner. On June 18, 1949 in Michigan City, IN she married Frank Joseph Magro; he preceded her in death June 3, 1996. Laura was a passionate home economics and physical education school teacher who had touched so many lives in so many ways. She taught for 44 years helping students from Virginia, New Buffalo, Buchanan, Three Oaks and Michigan City Jr. and Sr. high schools. Laura was New Buffalo’s first women’s basketball coach, and she loved athletics and sports. She was especially proud of her grandchildren’s sport and academic achievements. Laura was also an extremely accomplished seamstress. Her daughters-in-law, Linda and Kim Magro carry on her teaching legacy at New Buffalo area schools.
Laura is survived by her two sons Frank (Linda) Magro of New Buffalo and John (Kim) Magro of Bridgman and six grandchildren Sarah, Nick, Kaylee, Jay, Cameron and Conner. She is preceded in death by her parents Loyd and Margie; her husband Frank; brothers Rufus and Ralph and sisters Vera and Jo. Laura will be greatly missed by all those who were fortunate to have known and loved her.
A Celebration of Life service will take place on Sat., May 9, 12:00 Noon, at the Three Oaks Free Methodist Church, with Pastor Ray Babcock officiating. Friends may visit with the family at 11:00 AM before the service at the church and on Friday from 5:00-8:00 PM at the Sommerfeld Chapel, 15 N. Barton St., New Buffalo, MI. Laura’s final resting place will be at Woodlawn Cemetery, Woodlawn, Virginia. Memorial contributions may be made to the Three Oaks Free Methodist Church.
