Douglas (Daryl) Craig, 88, of New Buffalo, MI passed away at St. Anthony Hospital in Michigan City, IN on Sunday, August 28, 2016. Arrangements have been entrusted to Sommerfeld Chapel, 15 N. Barton St., New Buffalo, MI.
Doug was born on February 22, 1928 in Louisa, KY to the late William and Mary (Moore) Craig. He served his country during the Korean War while in the U.S. Army. In 1951, with the 2nd Infantry Division, Doug served at Heartbreak Ridge, receiving the Purple Heart. He worked at the Indiana State Prison in Michigan City, retiring as a Lieutenant prison guard in 1990, after 33 years of service. Doug was a family man, making his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren his priority.
He is survived by his three children-Darylene (Rick) Jasper of Camden, TN, Randy (Tresnja) Craig of Michigan City, IN and Rodney (Debbie) Craig of New Buffalo, MI; stepsons-David Steinborn of Henderson, NV and Doug (Kathy) Steinborn of Michigan City, IN; stepdaughters-Pam (Larry) Swanson of Michigan City, IN and Paula (Mike) McElwain of Three Oaks, MI; brothers-Frank, Harold (Nancy) Craig and Dock (Nancy) Craig; sister-Gail Churchill; 9 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; 7 great great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Doug is preceded in death by his first wife-Deloris Maynard Craig(1965) and his second wife-Nancy Steinborn Craig(1995); grandchild-Truman Smith, Jr.; great grandson-Ryan Smith; and sisters- Sammie Hill and Marie Phelps.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on Thurs., Sept. 1, 2016, 11:00 am (EST) at Sommerfeld Chapel in New Buffalo. Burial with American Legion services with the New Buffalo Post #169 will follow at Pine Grove Cemetery in New Buffalo. Visitation is on Weds., August 31, from 5:00-8:00pm (EST) at the funeral home.
