Thomas DeVos

Thomas DeVos, 90, of New Buffalo passed away in his home on Sat., March 4, 2017. Arrangements have been entrusted to Sommerfeld Chapel, 15 N. Barton St., New Buffalo, MI.   Tom was born on December 21, 1926 in Chicago, IL to the late Thomas and Lillian (Cerny) DeVos. He was a 1944 graduate of New Buffalo High School. Tom served his country as a ship’s cook in the U.S. Navy during WWII. On December 28, 1946 he married Marilyn Louise Jones; she preceded him in death on Jan. 1, 1997. Tom worked in the plumbing and heating industry as an estimator and an advocate for the union Local 210 since 1951. He was a retired New Buffalo City volunteer fire fighter for many years. Tom was also a member of the VFW, New Buffalo American Legion Post #169 and a member of the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge #980 of Michigan City, IN. He enjoyed eating everyday and saying hi to everyone at Subway in his special booth. We will miss his bright blue eyes and wonderful smile. Tom loved listening to music in the park and winery’s.   Tom is survived by his two daughters – Cinderella (Larry) Brown of Jenison, MI and Deborah DeVos of New Buffalo; son – Gregory W. Harrington of New Buffalo; grandchildren – Trevor (Sara) Brown and Kimberly (Kurt Maitland) Brown; great grandchildren – Kaitlynn, Addyson, Alyse, Beau, Parker, Danielle and Allison; one great great grandson – Braden; and a brother – Raymond (Gigi) DeVos of Oak Forest, IL; and Bernadine K. Hickman like a sister of Algoma, WI.   A Celebration of Tom’s life will take place on Sat., June 17, from 1:00-3:00pm at the New Buffalo Township Park.  Tom’s final resting place is at Pine Grove Cemetery, New Buffalo, MI. Memorial contributions may be made to the New Buffalo City volunteer fire department.
