Samuel Jefferson Mayer

Samuel J. Mayer, 70, of Union Pier, MI passed away at St. Anthony Hospital in Michigan City, IN on Tuesday, November 14, 2017. Arrangements have been entrusted to Sommerfeld Chapel, 15 N. Barton St., New Buffalo, MI. Sam was born on June 1, 1947 in Escanaba, MI to the late Donald and Jeanette (LaVigne) Mayer. He married Bonnie Patejdl on July 30, 1982 in Lakeside, MI. Sam worked with the Berrien County Road Commission for 24 years, retiring in 2009. He was an avid outdoorsman – loved hunting, fishing, camping and snowmobiling. Sam was a fan of NASCAR, classic car auctions, and the Chicago Bears. He was also a member of the SAL New Buffalo Legion Post #169. Sam is survived by his wife Bonnie; his children – Shelly (Wade) Mayer Gazarkiewicz of LaPorte, IN, Heather Snyder Lau of Michigan City, IN, Noel Snyder of LaPorte, IN and David Potts of Benton Harbor, MI; four grandchildren – Kendel, Zane, Jasmine and Ryan; brothers – Don (Morene Meer) Mayer of Trail Creek, IN and Laurence ‘Fritz’ Mayer of Union Pier, MI; and sisters – Jane Mayer of Caldwell, Idaho and Midge Mayer of Boise, Idaho. A brother – Terry Mayer precedes him in death. A service celebrating Sam’s life will take place on Saturday, November 18, at 3:00 P.M. at Sommerfeld Chapel in New Buffalo, MI.
