Lyle's Obituary

Lyle “Scoop” G. Sumerix, 78, of Buchanan died Friday, October 16, 2009 in his home of natural causes. He was born August 21, 1931 in Charlotte, MI to the late Henry and Ina (Baker) Sumerix of Charlotte, MI. On March 25, 1956, he married Barbara J. (Plowman), who survives. Also surviving are children, Wayde (Camille) Sumerix of Ormond Beach, FL, Holly (Greg) Hernandez of Eugene, OR, Craig Sumerix of Buchanan, Laurie (James) McNamara of Boise, ID, Mark Sumerix of Ann Arbor, MI, Audrey (Ron) Foulks of Osceola, IN; sister, Marilyn (Charles) Rutter of Olivet, MI; seven grandsons and a granddaughter. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Amy Sumerix, in 1965; two sisters; and a brother. Lyle graduated from Charlotte High School in 1950 and received his Bachelors Degree in Journalism from Michigan State University in 1959 and served his country in the US Army in Korea. He was a newspaper reporter for the Berrien County Record, the Herald Palladium and the South Bend Tribune, which tied in with his activeness in the community. He was a past commander and member of the American Legion Post #51 in Buchanan, a member of the Friends of Oak Ridge Cemetery, an elder and member of the First Presbyterian Church, Buchanan, a board member of the Cass County Council On Aging, and involved as an adult leader with the Boy Scout Troup 541 for over 30 years. The funeral service will be Tuesday, October 20, 2009 at 10:30 am at the Swem Funeral Home, Buchanan. Pastor Pat Ramsden will officiate. Burial will follow at Oak Ridge Cemetery. Military Honors will be given by the American Legion Post #51, Buchanan. Time to visit with the family will be Monday, October 19 from 5-8 pm also at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Legion Post #51, 403 E. Front St, Buchanan, MI 49107 or to the First Presbyterian Church, 115 W. Front St, Buchanan, MI 49107.
