Virginia's Obituary

Virginia S. Nichols of Buchanan, Michigan died peacefully at home on Wednesday, April 14th following an extended illness. She was 88 years old.She was born to Louis W. and Lorena Palm Sherwin on October 22, 1921 in Oil City, PA. A graduate of Highland Park High School, Randolph Macon Women's College and Katie Gibbs School of New York City, Virginia grew up in Highland Park, IL and married Donald E. Nichols Jr. on September 6, 1947. Virginia is preceded in death by husband Donald and beloved daughter Dorothy. She is survived by Sons Keith (Glenda) of Niles, MI and Peter (Patricia) of Springboro, OH, honorary son Peter Jennings (Maggie) of Royston, England, four grandchildren, Jennifer Stouder Hanlon (Gregg) of Redlands, CA, Alex Nichols (Renee), and Adrienne Nichols of Buchanan, MI, and Julie Nichols King (Will) of Centerville, OH. plus great grandchildren Ariana Burrows and Alyssa and Kaiden Nichols. The family moved from Barrington, IL to Nappanee, IN in 1958 where Virginia and husband Don owned and operated the Nappanee Advance News and Farm & Home News. In 1971 they bought the Berrien County Record and operated it for many years until their retirement. Virginia was a long time member of the First Presbyterian Church in Buchanan where she served as a Deacon and Elder, 30 Club and the Book Club. She was an avid and copious reader and a great lover of anything with four legs with paws or hoofs or any animal for that matter. She was a great friend, a wonderful wife and a terrific Mother and an avid Notre Dame, Northwestern and Chicago Cubs fan. She and husband loved to travel including trips to UK/Europe and Japan. She will be greatly missed. She received wonderful care from Dr. Paul Detrisac, loving care by Hospice at Home of Buchanan, the loving care by Melody Muckenfuss and Happy At Home, and the loving attention by Rev. Dr. Patricia Ramsden and the wonderful neighbors and friends at Metea Ct. and in Buchanan and Nappanee. A memorial service and reception will be held on Saturday, April 17th at 1:00 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Buchanan with services provided by Swem Chapel. Donations may be made to First Presbyterian Church of Buchanan, Buchanan, Hospice at Home, Inc of Buchanan or your local humane society.
