Dorothy M. Hawks

Dorothy M. Hawks, 93, of Buchanan, Michigan died Saturday October 1st at Lakeland Medical Center in Niles, Michigan. Dorothy was born September 7, 1918 in Buchanan to the late Albert G. and Iva Smith Brown. She married Orville A. Hawks, who preceded her in death in 1956, on Oct.7th 1945 in Dowagiac, Michigan. Dorothy is survived by a daughter Nancy D. Leiter of Buchanan, Michigan. A sister Velva Griffiths preceded her in death. Dorothy was a lifetime resident of Buchanan graduating from Buchanan High School in class of 1936 and she attended the former South Bend College of Commerce for two years. Dorothy was employed by Buchanan Community Schools where she worked as a secretary in the business office for over fifty years, retiring in 1989. Dorothy was a lifetime member of the Buchanan Christian Church where she taught Sunday school.Services will be Thursday, October 6th, at 10:30 am at Swem Chapel in Buchanan with Dr. Barry Thornton officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Ridge Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday the 5th from 4-7 p.m., also at Swem Chapel. Memorial Contributions may be made to the Buchanan Christian Church 112 W. 3rd.
