Scott's Obituary

Scott Alex Mackie, 37, passed away peacefully at Franciscan St. Anthony Hospital in Michigan City, Indiana in the early hours of Sunday, September 22nd, 2013 with his parents by his side. Two days early from being a bicentennial baby, Scott bounded into the world on July 2nd, 1976 at McHenry Hospital in McHenry, IL to John and Janet Mackie. The fifth of six children, Scott excelled in school and earned his varsity letters as a quarterback in football and a point guard in basketball at Crystal Lake Central High School in Crystal Lake, IL. Graduating near the top of his class in 1994, he went on to earn both a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Kansas. In 2001, he accepted a job as an engineer for Boeing in St. Louis, Missouri working on classified projects until he left the company in 2012. Scott was in the processes of earning a PhD from Washington University in St. Louis when he passed. Aside from his mathematically gifted mind, Scott had a strong passion for the arts, specifically music and writing. He filled countless binders with his poetry, some of which he gave to friends for use in their music. But perhaps the greatest joy brought to him in this lifetime was his four children. Scott is survived by his children, John, Katie, Joey and Susie; his parents, John and Janet; his three sisters, Pamela (Danny) Malott, Sherri (Brian) Martinie, and Stephanie (Paulie) Santos; his two brothers, Jerry (Jules) and Mark (Abby); and many nieces and nephews. A funeral will be held at 1:00 pm Friday, September 27th at Swem Funeral Home, 301 W. Front St, Buchanan, Michigan. There will be a viewing two hours prior to the funeral, beginning at 11:00 am, at the funeral home. Burial will be in Oak Ridge Cemetery. A gathering of family and friends will follow at Faith United Methodist Church, 728 N. Detroit St., Buchanan, MI. In lieu of flowers, a fund has been created for the benefit of Scott’s four children. Donations can be made payable to Scott Mackie and mailed to 5th3rd Bank, 2753 S. 11th St, Niles MI 49120. To sign his guest book or leave a condolence message, please visit www.swemchapel.com.
