Charles's Obituary

Charles “Chuck” Vergon, 85, passed away on January 24, 2015 at his home while partaking in one of his favorite pass times of cutting firewood.   He was one of five children of Mae and Glenn Vergon’s close knit family. A Memorial Service celebrating his life will be Friday, May 22nd, 2015 at 11:00 a.m., at Swem Chapel in Buchanan, with Pastor Edward Slate of  Faith United Methodist Church officiating.  Visitation will begin one hour prior to the service.  Full military rites will be provided by the United States Marine Corp. along with American Legion Post 51 of Buchanan at the Veterans Circle, Oak Ridge Cemetery in Buchanan following the service. Chuck was a 1947 graduate of Buchanan High School where he participated in sports, especially football and track. Upon graduation he joined the U. S. Marine Corps and proudly served his country for 30 years. He was honorably discharged in 1978. Chuck served multiple tours in Vietnam and Korea and several other world conflicts. He obtained the highest rank for enlisted personnel of Master Gunnery Sergeant and received numerous awards and commendations. We appreciate his service for our country. Chuck was always busy. Not one to stand around. While still in the Military, between many of his tours away from home, he found time to build a large barn which became his “man cave”. After retirement, while still in North Carolina, he needed to stay busy thus worked for the East Carolina Stockyards. Another group that will sorely miss him. He was married to Agnes LeGros on August 1955 in the state of Maryland. They had one son, Glenn Allen Vergon. Upon discharge from the Marines he resided with his family in North Carolina and after their passing returned to Buchanan in 2000. Chuck enjoyed many activities especially hunting, fishing, gardening, in general anything he could do outdoors. Out of somewhat necessity, he did his own cooking concocting many recipes, some of which were “not” enjoyed by family and friends. When house bound, he also enjoyed reading. He was a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association. He spent many enjoyable days at his cabin in Marenisco in the Upper Peninsular of Michigan. Chuck is survived by his sister, Norma (Don) Metzger, brothers, Fred (Joy) Vergon and Doyle (Judy) Vergon, several nieces and nephews including great and great greats all of which were very special to him and will miss their “Uncle Chuck”. He was preceded in death by his wife Agnes, son Glenn, parents Mae and Glenn, brother Elwood (Betty) Vergon and several other family members. If you wish, memorials may be made to the Buchanan Public Library, Buchanan MI. Arrangements have been entrusted to Swem Chapel, Buchanan. To sign his guest book or leave a condolence message please visit www.swemchapel.com.
