Dorothy's Obituary

Dorothy Alice Stout passed away on Friday, June 5. She was born in Toronto, Ontario to Henry and Alice Hague on March 31, 1919. Upon graduation from Runnymede Collegiate she worked for the Steel Company of Canada, British Intelligence, the Canadian Embassy in Tokyo, Chicago Rawhide, and the Chicago law firm of Griffen, Stout, and Baird. She married Frederick E. Stout on June 26, 1954 and gave birth to their son in May of the following year. In 1960, the family moved to Buchanan, Michigan where she spent all but the last three years of her life. She was active in many organizations, including the Red Cross, United Way, Orchard Hills Country Club, Trinity Episcopal Church in Niles, and a Presbyterian group or two. She loved playing bridge, golf, crocheting, and in her younger days tennis, skiing, and basketball. She also liked to watch most sporting events, especially the Toronto Maple Leafs’ games—at least until the NHL started putting teams in Florida and playing games in June. She was known for her sense of humor, distinctive laugh, and love of things purple but she was also quite astute about financial matters and world affairs. One of the highlights of her later days was being named Grand Marshal of the Buchanan Memorial Day parade in honor of her WWII service with British Intelligence in New York City and also at Camp X outside of Toronto where spies and commandoes, including Ian Fleming, trained. She is preceded in death by her parents, step-mother, Dorothy, two sisters, Kathleen and Barbara, two brothers, Duke and Alan, and her beloved husband, Frederick. She is survived by her son, David, daughter-in-law, Anita, numerous nieces and nephews, and six step-grandchildren. Friends may visit with the family from 6:31 P.M. until 8:31 P.M. Wednesday June 10 at the Swem Funeral Home, 301 W. Front St., Buchanan.  Committal Services will be held at 2:01 P.M. Thursday at the Oak Ridge Cemetery  Chapel in Buchanan, with Mother Pam Sten officiating.   A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 20 at 12:01 PM at the Riverview Park Christian Church, 2929 Niles Rd. in St. Joseph, with Dorothy’s son, the Rev. David F. Stout, presiding.  Those wishing to sign Dorothy’s Memory Book online may do so at www.swemchapel.com. Memorials may be given to the American Red Cross and/or Trinity Episcopal Church in Niles, Michigan.
