Freida Barker

Freida Barker, 93, of Buchanan, passed away on Thursday, May 04, 2017 at Lakeland Community Hospital, Niles. A memorial gathering will be held at 1 PM on Sunday, June 4, 2017 at the Buchanan Senior Center. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Buchanan Senior Center, 810 Rynearson St., Buchanan, MI 4917 or the Buchanan District Library, 128 E. Front St., Buchanan, MI 49107. Freida was born on July 5, 1923 in Sodus, MI to the late Alex and Mary (Derkovite) Csepregi. She graduated from Benton Harbor High School in 1940 and was employed for twelve years in the office of Lockway-Stauck Paper Co. in Benton Harbor. On June 21, 1952 she married Lemuel “Duke” Barker in South Bend, IN. After his retirement in 1976 they spent 30 winters in Satsuma, FL. He passed away on March 19, 2007. She enjoyed ballroom dancing from the age of 14 until the time of her husband’s passing. She bowled on two leagues for 25 years each and loved to play cards. Freida is survived by her sons, Joseph (Monika) Barker of Kalamazoo and Kevin (Dorothy) Barker of Dowagiac; grandson, Augustin Barker of Goshen; step-grandchildren, Dayna, Brandon, Aaron and Ale and four great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents; husband of 55 years, “Duke”; brother, John in 1990 and sister and brother-in-law, Gertrude and Charles Wallace in 2008 and 2009.
