Phillip Weston Kellis, 60, of Chandler, AZ, formerly of Dowagiac, MI, died on Monday, August 29, 2016 at Chandler Regional Hospital. Funeral services will take place on Saturday, September 10, 2016 at 11am at Clark Chapel & Cremation Services, 405 Center St. Dowagiac, Michigan. Interment will follow at Riverside cemetery, Dowagiac, MI. The family will receive friends at the funeral home, Friday from 5-7pm. Memorial donations may be directed to the family, c/o Leslie Payne. Phil was born on August 31, 1955 to Phyllis and Leonard Kellis in Cassopolis, Michigan. He attended and graduated in 1973 from Dowagiac Union High School, where he was “The King Drummer” of the pep band and was also a member of the marching and concert bands. He enjoyed coaching little league baseball and reffing basketball games. The love of his life were his three children. Nothing made him happier than him showing you pictures of them in his wallet and speaking of them with such pride. Phil was a gentle man, known to always have a beautiful smile on his face and made others smile with his awesome sense of humor. He has remained a huge Michigan State University fan throughout his life. He moved to Arizona in November of 1981, working at Motorola, Sears and at the time of death, he was a Customer Account Advisor of Consumer Cellular. Phil was so excited to come “home” two weeks ago to the band reunion and his sister’s wedding. He has made his final trip home where he will be laid to rest in Riverside Cemetery. His mother, Phyllis Pompey Payne, father, Leonard Kellis and step-father, Chester Payne, preceded his death.
He is survived by three children, Trenton Kellis of Flagstaff, Arizona and Whitney Kellis and Weston Kellis of Mesa, Arizona. He is also survived by one grandson, Damian Macdonald-Kellis of Mesa, Arizona. He leaves to mourn sisters, Teresa (Ken) Wilson of Southfield, Michigan, Leslie (Albert) Payne-Bownes of Dowagiac, Michigan, Teresa Newton of Scottsdale, Arizona, and Gayle Flosom of Detroit, Michigan. His surviving brothers include, Aaron Armstrong (Jessie) of Portage, Michigan, Eric (Jessica) Payne of Lowell, Michigan, Leonard Kellis of Battle Creek, Michigan, Lennard Armstrong of Plano, Texas, Timothy Armstrong of Phoenix, Arizona and step-brother Chester Mickles of Greenville, Alabama. He also leaves to mourn, special friends Christopher Lucas of Indianapolis, Indiana, Donald Lucas of Dowagiac, Michigan, James Gentry of Kalamazoo, Michigan and Randy Melvin of Dowagiac, Michigan, Two special cousins, Ricky and Roy Bryant of Kalamazoo, Michigan and many other cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
