Herbert Elwood Smith, 92, of Dowagiac, MI passed away on Thursday, November 24, 2016 at The Timbers of Cass County, Dowagiac, MI.
A Celebration of his life will take place at 1pm on Thursday, December 1, 2016 at Clark Chapel, 405 Center St. Dowagiac, MI. Interment, with military honors, will take place at Riverside Cemetery, Dowagiac. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday from 12 noon until the time of the service. Herbert was born in Dowagiac, MI on June 4, 1924 to the late Robert Smith and Calla (Lilly) Smith. He served in the US Army during W.W. II. He was involved with the start up of the former Jessup Door and worked as a foreman for over 15 years. He then went to work a Southwestern Michigan College where he was a cabinet carpenter for 18 years. He was best known however for designing and building over 80 kitchens in the area.
Herbert was married to Evelyn (Wentworth) Smith on September 17, 1952 in Hartford, MI.
In addition to his parents, Herbert was predeceased by five siblings, Arthur “Dean” Smith, Richard Smith, Gerald Smith, Jim Smith and Vivian Morford and two step-brothers, Delbert Smith and George Smith.
Herbert is survived by his wife, Eveyln Wentworth Smith, Dowagiac; two sons, Lee (Susan) Smith, Keene, TX and Rodger Smith, Dowagiac and, two brothers, Jack Smith, Niles, MI and Robert Smith, Dowagiac, MI. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, Karen, Kimberly, Kurt, Kevin, Kelly, Jim and Jeff and six great grandchildren, Rebecka, LeAnne, Jayden, Maggie, Logan and Eleanor.
