Flint's Obituary

Flint William Mengel, Sr., 81, of Decatur, passed away on Thursday, December 15, 2016 at The Timbers of Cass County, Dowagiac. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, December 19, 2016 at Decatur Bible Church, 80797 M-51 North, Decatur, MI, 49045 with Pastor Steve DeGroft officiating. The family will receive friends in the church from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.  Interment will take place later that afternoon at Hamilton Twp. Cemetery and will be private for family members.  Clark Chapel, 405 Center St. Dowagiac is assisting with arrangements.  Memorial donations may be directed to the AWANA Children’s Group at Decatur Bible Church.  Those wishing to sign Flint’s online memory book may do so at www.clarkfh.com. Flint was born on December 18, 1934 in Cass County to Peter John Mengel and Bernice (Nagel) Mengel.  He served in the US Army Corps of Engineers and after being honorably discharged,  began working on his family farm which provided the Campbell’s Soup Company with most of their watercress.  He met his wife, Mary Elizabeth (Morris) Mengel at a USO Dance and they were married in Oklahoma on March 21, 1959. Flint was a member of Decatur Bible Church and a former member of Volinia Baptist Church. He was very active in the Junior Church,  AWANA Children’s Group and actually purchased a bus to help get children to church. He was always ready to help someone in need, including providing firewood for those who needed it.  Flint was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying fishing, hunting, trapping and raising homing pigeons. Flint is survived by his wife, Mary Elizabeth (Morris) Mengel, Decatur; his three children, Teresa A.  (John) Morehead, Knoxville, TN, John R. (Lisa) Mengel, Decatur, MI and  Flint W.  (Penny) Mengel, Jr., Dowagiac, MI; two brothers, Peter John (Shirley) Mengel, Kalamazoo, MI and Rocky Action (Janice) Mengel, Dowagiac, MI and two sisters, Diane Dare (the late Harold) Gallup, Stevensville, MI and Patricia Mengel.  Flint is also survived by seven grandchildren, Amanda (Nathan) Wilson, Elizabeth (Wayne) Mengel, Derek John Morehead, Joshua Dawson Morehead, Curtis Mengel, Ethan Mengel and Nathaniel Mengel and four great grandchildren, Wyatt and Cheyenne Wilson and Irelynn and Adaline Randolph.
