Doris's Obituary

Doris M. Cox 88 of Dowagiac passed away Sunday, November 12, 2017. A Celebration of Life will be held Sunday, November 19, at 2:00PM at The Silver Creek United Methodist Church in Dowagiac, with Pastor Sara Carlson officiating. Friends may visit with family at the church from 12:00-1:45 prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, Memorial Contributions may be made to The Silver Creek United Methodist Church where Doris was a longtime member or the Cass District Library where she enjoyed volunteering for many years. Those wishing to leave an online condolence may do so at www.clarkch.com. Doris was born September 3, 1929 in Dowagiac, Michigan to John and Nellie (Flory) Spivey. She graduated from Dowagiac High School in the class of 1947.  Doris went on to Western Michigan University where she double majored in Chemistry and Music and earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology. Doris married Robert Cox on January 20, 1952. Shortly after marriage, she joined her husband in Panama where he was serving in the United States Army. After returning from Panama, Robert and Doris started their family. While raising five children, Doris was employed as a Medical Technologist at Lee Memorial Hospital in Dowagiac, St Joseph Hospital in South Bend as well as St Joseph Hospital in St Joseph.  Doris also served as a pianist/organist for the Keeler United Methodist Church. After retirement, Doris enjoyed winters in Texas bird watching and shopping in Mexico. Doris was extremely talented and was a true artist.  She excelled at knitting, sewing and quilting, as well as spinning and weaving.  She belonged to several guilds where she enjoyed sharing her patterns, projects and ideas.  Over the years, friends and family have enjoyed many thoughtful handmade gifts made by Doris. Doris is survived by her husband of 65 years, Robert Cox: Children Mary (Robert) Magin of Katy, Texas, William (Beverly) Cox of Sugarland, Texas, Lisa (David) Johnson of Westlake, Ohio and Valerie (Jeff) Locke of Cassopolis, Michigan. Grandchildren Include: Jacob (Lori) Magin, Ian (Brittany) Magin, Sean Magin, Jordan (Jason) Hughey, Ryan (Amy) Fedore, Ivan (Carly Dresser) Fedore, Natalie Cox, Andrew Cox, Christopher Johnson, Allison (Thomas Boggs) Johnson, Katherine Johnson, Matthew Locke and Jayna Locke and 8 great-grandchildren. Doris was preceded in death by her parents John and Nellie Spivey, her sister Jean Barnes and her daughter Julie Fedore.
