Emma Jean “E.J.” Jerz, 86, of Decatur, passed away Friday, August 3, 2018, at the Cass County Medical Care Facility. Per E.J.’s wishes, a private service will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the Cass County Medical Care Facility, 23770 Hospital St., Cassopolis, MI 49031. Those wishing to leave a condolence online may do so at www.clarkch.com. E.J. was born December 27, 1931, to Vance & Goldie (Hodges) Drake in Dowagiac. She graduated from Dowagiac High School in 1949 then earned her Bachelor’s in Education from Western Michigan University. E.J. worked as a special education teacher in the Edwardsburg School System and as a substitute teacher and private tutor. E.J. was a past leader of knitting and photography in the 4-W 4-H Club.  For many years she exhibited her home-grown vegetables and flowers in the open classes at the Cass County Fair, and enjoyed attending the fair throughout her life.  She was a member of the Civitan Club and was involved with Jubilee Mission at the Federated Covenant Church in Dowagiac. E.J. especially enjoyed hosting family get-togethers at her home on the Mill Pond. E.J. is survived by her children, Craig (Mary) Jerz of Decatur, Susan (Michael) Accoe of Dowagiac, Laura (David) Kogut of La Grange, KY, Greg (Tammy) Jerz of Dowagiac and David Jerz of Decatur; twelve grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; and siblings Eunice Luke of Dowagiac and Estelle Beach of Decatur. E.J. was preceded in death by her parents Vance & Goldie Drake and siblings Eleanor Janssen, Elaine Matthews and Emerson Drake.
