Doris's Obituary
Doris M. Groendyk, 92, formerly of Decatur, passed away, Saturday, May 26, 2018 at Rose Arbor Hospice in Kalamazoo.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held 5:00 P.M. Wednesday, May 30, 2018 at Newell Chapel, 83313 M-51, Decatur, with Rev. Lonnie Carpenter officiating. Private Burial will follow at Lakeside Cemetery in Decatur. Friends may visit with the family from 3:00 P.M. until 5:00 P.M. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials in Doris’ name may be made to Hospice Care of Southwest Michigan, 222 N. Kalamazoo Mall, Suite 100, Kalamazoo, MI 49008. Doris was born January 28, 1926 in Grand Rapids, Michigan to Claude & Pearl (Stong) Skinner. She graduated from Grandville High School Class of 1944 where she served as the Drum Majorette. On March 6, 1947 she married Harold Eugene “Bud” Groendyk in Grandville. Doris’ focus was tending to her home and her family. She loved to cook and made an amazing pot roast & delicious blueberry pie. Later in life, Doris worked for many years at the Decatur Republican where she wore many hats. She was a member of the Decatur Study Club & the First Reformed Church where she served as an Elder for many years. In her free time Doris enjoyed golf, tennis, jig saw puzzles, word search puzzles, flower gardening & knitting.
Doris is survived by her children-Joan (Robert) Bos of Wayland, MI, Nancy (Chester) Baranski of Mattawan, MI, LouAnn (Nate) Robinson of Cassopolis, MI, Steve (Janice) Groendyk of Coloma, David (Kathleen) Groendyk of Beavercreek, OH; fourteen grandchildren; twenty great-grandchildren; and her sister June Blair of North Carolina.
She was preceded in death by her husband Bud on August 20, 1989, her parents, and her brother Melvin Skinner.
