Vernon Arnold Klug, 90 passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his family on Friday, October 17, 2014
Visitation will be held Monday, October 20th from 5-8 PM and Tuesday, October 21 from 10-11 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Berrien Springs. A Celebration of Life Services will be held at 11 AM Tuesday with burial to follow at Union Cemetery on Pokagon Road. A luncheon will be provided at Trinity Lutheran Church immediately following the burial. The luncheon is being graciously provided by the Lutheran Ladies Aid of Trinity. Memorials may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church and School, Berrien Springs where Arnold and Clara’s children attended in addition to numerous grandchildren. Friends wishing to send a condolence may do so at the guest book at www.heritage-chapel.com. Arrangements entrusted to Heritage Chapel & Cremations services of Berrien Springs.
Arnold was born in Sodus, Michigan in 1924 to German farmers Herman & Bertha (Jantz) Klug as the 10th of 12 children, and is survived by three siblings; Emma Heiden, Walter (Eleanor )Klug, and Rich (Joyce) Klug. Nine siblings preceded him in death.
He married in 1945 and is survived by his loving wife Clara (Disterheft) Klug along with their children Marilyn (Charlie) Thomas of Texas, Ernest (Patty) Klug, Diane Sink, Gerald (Karen) Klug, and Kevin (Cathy) Klug of Berrien County as well as 13 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Arnold and Clara recently celebrated their 69th anniversary and enjoyed 35 years in sunny Florida during the winter months.
He raised his family as a life-long fruit and vegetable grower on his family farm. He was a stockholder selling produce for 40 years at the South Bend Farmer’s Market. He developed a wealth of personal customer relationships where he became affectionately known as “grandpa” who always gave the children free apples. Arnold was a faithful Christian servant and board member at Trinity Lutheran School and Church in Berrien Springs. He proudly served on the board of Federal Land Bank (currently Greenstone Financial) for 23 years.
